Family Reading Night 2015 Recap

On Friday, May 1st, 2015, the librarians, teachers, and staff of the Pioneer Central School District presented the fourth annual district-wide Family Reading Night.  This event was structured upon the theme “Get Drawn into Reading” and featured activities related to literacy and art.

The evening’s special guest was Mr. Scribbles, a local artist and entertainer.  Mr. Scribbles amazed all event participants by turning scribbles into beautiful works of art.  The Arcade Elementary chorus and Bob Muhlbauer, a local musician (and my dad!) provided the music for the evening.

Other activities throughout the evening featured reading and art.  Students tried their luck at the Harry Potter Trivia station.  Pioneer high school students organized an activity station centered upon the books The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Where the Wild Things Are. Craft activities included origami (featuring the characters from The Strange Case of Origami Yoda series), coloring, pom pom/pipe cleaner crafts, bookmark making, May Day flowers, duct tape crafts, and rainstick making.

Rainsticks were a popular item!

Due to generous donations from local businesses, the first 150 families received a Family Reading Night tote bag, book, and other reading/craft supplies.  The donations also helped to fund many raffle items.

A dance demonstration from Ms. Tanya Siddle of Soul 2 Sole Dance Studio, Dr. Seuss activities, a recording studio, computer coding station, and book fair rounded out the evening’s offerings.  The Pioneer Faculty Association and the Girls Track Team sponsored a successful free book swap.

Family Reading Night is becoming a highly-anticipated event at Pioneer!  It is wonderful to see staff, students, and community members come together for an exciting night of literacy activities.  We are looking forward to hosting another event next year.
